"I basically blew my university days in the pursuit of one girl."
Richard Derrington has been trashed, the sort of tragic thrashing when the take-out place's caller ID identifies you as your ex, the kind of thorough trashing that causes you to invent spontaneous trips to Melbourne and makes heartbreaking moments of junk mail. That may be why he's distracted and work and crap on the racquetball court. That may be why Greg the cat has found himself ground zero for a flea infestation and why Richard's renovation of his grandparents' home has begun and ended at the verandah railing.
But that's not altogether true. In between a complicated relationship with his boss and earning himself a Neighbor of the Month award on Zigzag Street, Richard will correct anyone who calls him Ricky, get caught up by The Spanish Tragedy, and stumble his way from perpetrator of a mild concussion to befuddled participant in a dinner party that may or may not be a first date.
Zigzag Street. It's where Richard Derrington will dance naked in the office. It's where he might just come of age in his late twenties.
And it's where it all began for critically acclaimed Brisbane author Nick Earls. Winner of the Betty Trask award, Who Weekly called Zigzag Street "A comic masterpiece." Readers called it "seriously funny" and "Great Australian writing."

Nick Earls' easy-flowing words engage you immediately in the story and make you feel more at home on the first page than some stories manage to achieve in several chapters.Earls has a way of creating a scene while avoiding bland detail, which is probably my favourite aspect of his writing. His subtlety in creating characters who are so incredibly life like makes this story highly enjoyable.
Possibly the only book I have ever actually laughed out loud while reading. Can't rate it highly enough.

Zigzag Street A novel The Brisbane Rewound Trilogy Book 2 edition by Nick Earls Exciting Press Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was the first Nick Earls novel I read and I was immediately hooked. Richard's desperation is hilarious and cringe-worthy. Nick Earls has a great way of making the most terrible time in someone's life into an extremely funny journey of discovery. You'll fall in love with Nick Earls's stories.
Okay, so we've all had some heartbreak in our lives and we've all done some foolish things, but ZigZag Street takes a journey out of desolation and makes it hilarious and gentle and kind (plus you learn the risks of a diet too heavy with baked beans and popcorn and a best-friend's nonchalant and negligently well-intentioned advice.) It's funny, human and smart and you will never look the same way at a single light in a night-time office again....
When my brother read the book, he kept ringing my sister to read her bits but would be laughing so much she couldn't understand what he was saying...
For me, ZigZag Street is with Pride and Prejudice as a book I go back to and read again.
Great book, loved it!
A lyrically charming novel that acts as the perfect introduction to his work. Buy it now and revel in the post modernism.
