Since his commanding officer in the Peninsula took a bullet meant for him, James Moore, now the Earl of Rutledge, feels responsible for the dead man's young son and the boy's exquisite mother, Carlotta Ennis – so responsible that he offers to marry the lavender-eyed beauty. Though their marriage was not to be a love match, Carlotta's torturing presence has James yearning to make her his true wife.
Though she did not love his lordship, her desperate situation forced her to accept his proposal. Little did she know she would come to crave being with him, would hunger for his every touch. If only she could be worthy of the fine man she's married, if only she can keep him from learning her dark secret . . .

EXCERPT
While waiting for James's tub to fill, Carlotta knelt at his feet and assisted him in removing his muddied boots.
"Never mind me," he said. "I daresay Mannington can manage. You'll need to remove the soot and mud from your own self."
She met his gaze and spoke throatily. "I wish to send Mannington away."
Now he understood. As exhausted as he was, he understood and his body feebly responded to the velvet tone of her seductive voice.
Mannington stepped from the dressing room with clean clothing for his master.
"I shan't need you any more tonight, Mannington," James said, his eyes never leaving Carlotta's.
"Very good, sir," the valet answered flatly as he set the clothing on James's bed then turned on his heel and departed.
With the firelight as a backdrop, James watched the footmen pour the last kettles of water into the tub, then leave the bed chamber.
Watching her husband with smoldering eyes, Carlotta reached for his buttons. James drew in his breath. She began to unfasten them, one by one. When she was finished, she lay her hand over the hair that matted on his chest. "So white there compared to here," she whispered as her hand reached to stroke his blackened face.
His breathing grew more harsh, his mind and heart shaken to their depths by her gentleness--and his ever-swelling love for her.
Slowly, she removed the shirt from him. "Shall we stand?" she whispered.
James answered her without words, pulling her up with him. Her hands slipped to the bare skin beneath his breeches, and she gave them a tug. "I shall require your assistance in removing these, my darling."
My darling? Good God in heaven! He was beginning to believe his wife had, indeed, fallen in love with him.

The unusual part here is that the heroine is portrayed as a selfish, shallow woman who takes advantage of a man's good nature to entice him into marriage. I found myself wondering how such a woman could possibly be the HEROINE! But I kept reading, nonetheless, and I'm so glad I did. A heroine needs to have at least some flaws; who can identify with a heroine who is so perfect that everyone falls in love with her? Not me, that's for sure!As the story begins, Carlotta is a war widow who is seriously depressed after being dumped by the man she loved and expected to marry, even though he told her from the beginning that he would never marry her. Although he apparently supported her and gave her expensive gifts, she never saw herself as his mistress until he gave her a diamond necklace and told her he was marrying another, but that he wouldn't mind if she continued as his mistress. Carlotta realizes that she has been nothing a whore to him, and has sacrificed her reputation for no good reason. Okay, this is where the weird part begins. Unless her lover had been indiscreet enough to shout their relationship all over town, why would this make her a pariah? Widows were allowed to enjoy discreet liaisons, even taking on protectors, without repercussions from society, even though, gulp, everyone knew about it. So it makes no sense that this one affair would cost Carlotta all her friends and cause her to feel like a fallen woman. But hey, I liked the book so much I couldn't stop, so I forgive the author for this somewhat glaring error, and move on to what made the story so riveting.
And essentially, it was the characters. In the beginning, Carlotta is not only worldly and grasping and still devastated from her ill-fated affair, but she harbors a deep hatred for man who caused her husband's death six years ago. James has unexpectedly inherited a title and a fortune, and nearly the first thing he wants to do is make amends to the widow and son of the man who died because of his mistake in battle. Carlotta really wants to throw him out, but she is deeply in debt and cannot make herself turn down his financial assistance. When he expresses interest in her son, who has lived with her grandmother almost from birth, she recklessly agrees to send for him, and then discovers that she is a stranger to her son. With James's help, she learns to be a good mother to her son, and when James offers to marry her--even though she suspects it's because he wants to be a father to her son--she agrees, all the while determined to hide her past love affair and make up for it by becoming a devoted wife and mother.
Of course, James has eyes enough to see that she was an indifferent mother at first, but is gratified to see how quickly that changes. The beautiful, flirtatious, shallow, and selfish Carlotta becomes a loving mother as she spends time around her son and learns what it's like to truly care for another person. Although she frequently reflects sadly that it's a shame she doesn't love her husband, she is actually falling under his spell as she sees what a responsible, caring man he is. And since she owes it to him to be the best wife she can, she goes out of her way to match him as a responsible, caring spouse. Of course, they go through the usual ritual of each thinking the other doesn't love him/her and then realizing that they do, but there is still much heartache in store for them, and it's not hard to anticipate what it will be. Carlotta has managed to keep her love affair secret for many months; how could she know that she herself would be the one to inadvertently reveal it and jeopardize the happiness of all three of them?
I loved this book and intend to read the other two books in the series as well. One thing I have learned is not to pay too much attention to ratings. People have different tastes, and I've found a lot of mediocre books with 4-5 star ratings because of 2- or 3-line gushing reviews, presumably by the author's generous friends. Few books are unflawed, but in my opinion, any book that keeps me engrossed all the way through is worth five stars, and this one definitely is.

The Bride Secret The Brides of Bath Book 3 edition by Cheryl Bolen Romance eBooks Reviews
I just finished reading book 3 in the "Brides of Bath" series by Cheryl Bolen The Bride's Secret. As you can probably already tell from my other reviews of the first two books of the series, I enjoyed the book. Although this one gave me an added twist, because I always enjoy it in a weird sort of way when I can get angry at a fictional character. When the book first started I was angry at Carlotta for neglecting her son and allowing herself to be used for so long by someone she thought she loved... being Gregory's mistress. However, I later thought about it, and realized we all do crazy things when we are in love, and she probably thought she was doing the best thing for her son at the time; leaving him with her grandmother. Needless to say, as a hopeless romantic, I really enjoyed watching the transition from self-absorbed she devoted mother and wife to her husband. I know the author doesn't say so in the end, and I don't want to spoil anything for myself in the last box, but I really hope that Stevie ends up being okay. After all, as an avid reader, I've always been quite a stickler for happy ending. You are going to love this book!
6 Stars+++ I am not ashamed to confess I cried during the last chapter. Yes, this book was that good, imho, I normally like C. Bolen as an author. But for some reason this book really got to me. The leading lady is so human and so much like all of us; the groom is so like my husband I could not believe it. The story was wonderful; yes she had twists and surprises that this life long reader did not see coming, WELL DONE! At my age it seems that more authors than not have limited vision and imagination.
Now the negative, two tiny wrong words...not important words but those qualifiers like that/the or so and .....that is so much better than so many books we readers read, where there are wrong words or grammar, or spelling and so on nearly every page; when it gets to that point I toss the book.. Somehow the swearing and sex always seems to be correct. Go figure. But this was a well written book, and those two little minor errors could be fixed.....and did not take away from the wonderful story one little bit. I highly recommend it for heart warming in a cold winter!
In a prior book you learned to dislike Carlotta very much and I wondered WHY would the author write a romance featuring her? I soon found out that this character was like a real woman, one that made mistakes, lived the consequences but because of depression, didn't seem to be able to change her life and be able to recover from her
wrong choices.
My husband always has told me over and over and over, "There's two sides to every story" (when I say how wrong someone is) and this book tells me yet again that he is SO RIGHT! Ms. Bolen takes a woman that most readers dismissed as "hopeless" immoral and made her a woman that rose above the errors and began to believe in herself. I believe that Carlotta was as surprised as we were at what a GOOD woman and mother she was is she just trusted herself.
This woman had many "Strikes" against her and her self-image but with the love of a good man who believed in her, she became the person he believed she was and in so doing
redeemed herself in her own eyes!
This was a real eye opener and I will never question my husband's "two sides to every story" again'! ENJOY this story but I want you-you will have to buy the next one too and I know you'll enjoy that one too.
